Reading Groups
Book Worms: Ages 4-6 – Saturdays 10:00 – 10:30 a.m. – 4 Sessions
This is a delicate group. Our goal is to increase phonemic awareness, assist with pronunciation, recognize familiar signs and labels, develop awareness of syllables, and children will be able to retell stories that have been read to them in the past. Our team is dedicated to stimulating their imagination and expanding their understanding of the text that we read. We will read books to this group, and develop their language and listening skills; we are excited to watch them grow. Our open discussions and weekly activities will be a supplement to their classroom experience. We will assist in embracing and enhancing their imagination skills, as well as their association to new vocabulary words. Your little one will reach their milestone on the road to reading success. Children in this group will be on different levels; keep in mind that this platform is not to assess children – it is to promote their love of reading. Early intervention is key for struggling readers. Together we can help make this a wonderful experience! “Let’s be reasonable and add an eighth day to the week that is devoted exclusively to reading.” – Lena Dunham.
Little Explorers: Ages 7-9 – Tuesdays 7:00 – 7:50 p.m – 6 Sessions
This group tends to be reserved and have a strong fear of making errors while reading. Our priority is to increase their reading fluency, and allow your Little Explorers to correct their errors in a safe environment to boost their confidence. We will use context pictures to help identify unfamiliar words, and create a word wall together; our goal is to learn 8-10 new words by the end of the session. We will understand the humor in the text that we read and use our imagination to understand the author’s point of view. This program will include short films to support our reading. We will have great conversations with our peers! “That’s the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.” – Jhumpa Lahiri
Gold Star Readers: Ages 10-12 – Wednesdays 7:00 – 7:50 p.m. – 7 Sessions
This group inspired me to create I AM – A Reading Enrichment Program. At this stage, children are distracted from social media, online games, their friends as well as their cell phones. In some cases, they no longer have an interest in reading. Also in this stage, parents will allow children to devote most of their time to these distractions, to have their alone time. In some cases, I find that parents, unfortunately, will ask their child to read as a punitive measure rather than an enjoyable one. Our mission is to help this group restore their interest in reading. Our team will create an environment to help understand the benefits of reading, and the importance of balancing their social life and time spent on reading novels. Reading will become meaningful, interesting, and a priority. We will explore the different kinds of text and read for fun! “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seus
Reading Rockets: (Ages 13 to 15) – Thursdays 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. – 8 Sessions
It may be a difficult task to get this group interested in reading. We are here to help! This group is ready to analyze text for meaning. We will encourage our readers to understand that in life, mostly everything that we do consists of our ability to read and comprehend instructions. Reading challenges your imagination and makes you a better writer. This wonderful hobby also improves your conversational skills. Conversational skills are the key element to exchanging thoughts and ideas, and having excellent communication skills. Our goal is to prepare preteens for the world. Our conversations about the text we read will be interconnected with real life events and occurring realities of life. This reading experience will open doors and allow endless opportunities for preteens to be successful in their endeavors. We are ready for the world! “Think before you speak. Read before you think.” – Fran Lebowitz
Trendsetters: (Ages 16 to 18) – Fridays 7:00 – 8:00 p.m – 8 Sessions
Our mission is to support teens in developing the “will” to read. In this journey, we will focus on reading comprehension. And how to process text by understanding its meaning. We will rely heavily on background knowledge to process reading information. Our reading strategies are aimed to improve reading comprehension, vocabulary skills, critical and analytical thinking, and the ability to comprehend and process what was read. With your help -+ tests. “Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.” – Jim Rohn
